I believe that no god is greater than the TRUE and living GOD, the KING OF KINGS. He is the source of joy, contentment, love, and peace. THE GREAT AM I. I dethroned the god of social media by making a conscious decision in my own will to no longer yield my actions to the god of social media. I chose to return to God who sincerely loves my soul and is able to keep it safe through eternity by the strength of His spoken word. I prayed to the Lord, asking Him to speak to my heart and to my spirit from His word. I asked Him to reveal to me everything I needed to know in order for Him to become first in my life.
After God’s word broke me down, I repented before the Lord and took active steps to show fruits of repentance. I am so grateful to God because He rewired both my spirit and my mind. As a result, my whole perspective on social media has changed and so has my purpose for using it. If you’re someone who has struggled with social media like I have, I want to encourage you, run to God. Rid yourself of it until you are sure that God is controlling you and not social media. If you would allow me, I want to share with you a few tips that helped me to dethrone the god of social media and also helped me to continually keep God on the throne of my heart.
1. GO ON A SOCIAL MEDIA FAST
I strongly recommend this for everyone. Fasts are such a beautiful thing because they allow you to empty yourself with the purpose of being filled by God and all His goodness. So, if you’re struggling with social media go on a fast. Delete all your apps. Deactivate your account and get lost in God’s word. You don’t have to let everyone know what you are doing; neither, do you have to explain yourself to anyone. It’s between you and the Lord. Spend your time seeking God. Get to know Him in an intimate way. Allow His word to speak to your heart and remind you that He should be the object of your great love and it is Him who fulfills you. Go on a social media fast as often and as long as you need to.
“Lord You alone are my portion and my cup.” -Psalm 16:5
2. SPEND MORE TIME STUDYING GOD’S WORD
When the urge comes to go onto social media, pick up your bible. Will yourself to study God’s word. It’s a choice. If we have time to like, comment, and post, we have time to read, study, and memorize scripture. Word time should be much greater and more desirous than social media time. What we fill our hearts with is what will dictate and control our lives. If we want to be filled with God and have peace in our lives, then we must fill our hearts with His word and not social media. Make a commitment to God. I try to set limits on myself. For example, for this amount of hours, it’s my Jesus time. So, I put my phone down and study God’s word. Sometimes, I turn my phone off completely. I am just trying to encourage you that whatever you have to do to get back connected to God and stay connected to God, DO IT!!
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.”-Psalm 119:103
3. PRAY AND CHECK YOUR MOTIVES EVERY TIME YOU POST
What I started doing to myself is before I post something , I always pray and check my motives. If my heart is not right, if my intentions aren’t pure, I don’t post it. It’s as simply as that. Be honest. I then would sign off my social media and stay off until I got my heart right with God. I now realize the severity and seriousness of everything I post and promote. God sees the hidden motives of our hearts even if others can’t. I want to make sure that my heart is pure before God even when it comes to social media. What good would it be for me to post a scripture, but my motives for posting the scripture had nothing to do with glorifying God? In God’s sight it would be done in vain. So I encourage you, just like I encourage myself pray and check your motives. If they are not right, don’t post.
“I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” -Jeremiah 17:10
4. SEEK YOUR SECURITY AND VALIDATION THROUGH CHRIST AND NOT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA
Do not measure your worth by your likes, comments, followers, or subscribers. We must always remember that our true security, self-esteem, and validation is found in Christ Jesus and not a social media page. When we understand that truth, we will not allow what we see, read, or post on social media to impact our self-worth. Our security is found in the Lord and Him alone.
“In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.”- Psalm 25:1
5. BE SPIRIT LED AND NOT FLESH LED
Last but not least, be led by the Spirit when using social media. This thought was a turning point for me. I strongly believe that everything we do in life should be for the Lord and His glory. If it’s not for Him, then it’s worthless. So, I have chosen to use every social media account for the Lord and His glory. And I want what I share, promote, and post to be Spirit led and not Flesh led. I want to lovingly encourage you that whatever you do on social media, allow the Spirit of the Lord to led you and not your flesh. If it’s not for the Lord than really who or what is it for?
“For those who led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” -Romans 8:14
I write this with a heart full of love and compassion. Hear me when I say, SOCIAL MEDIA is not our life. GOD’s purpose for our life is what matters. What does it profit us if our life is filled with social media and not God?
Be Encouraged. #FearlessFaithfulFollowing
