For a Christian, change is not something we should fear or dread. It is apart of life and most importantly good, spiritual change is apart of the Christian life. A lot has changed in my life recently and if I’m honest I’m having a difficult time embracing the changes. Many days I have wept to the Lord because of the changes that are in my life. Some days I’ve questioned the Lord and even at times I have been angry. But praise be to God, that even in my foolish, fickle thinking He has been so lovingly patient with me. I love that God always has a way of reminding me of His amazing love and faithfulness. In His Word I can always find encouragement about whatever I’m dealing with.

Many Christians before me faced change and through their changing circumstances, their faith and love for God remained intact. Something that my 25 years of life has taught me is that change does not always “feel good.” However, as a Christian I can trust that God has the power to use whatever change that happens in my life for “my good” and for “His glory!” Many times we become selfish in our thinking. We must remember that we are not the only individuals who have had to face sudden or difficult change.

Remember Abram and Sarai? (Gen 12-13)

When God told Abram to leave his home country and go to the place in which He instructed. Don’t you think that was hard for Abram? He had to leave “his home” the only place he had known his whole life. Years of memories were made in that place. It was familiar, it was comfortable, it was home and now God was asking him to leave everything that he had known. Imagine how Sarai must have felt? She knew she had to go with her husband but I’m sure there was a part of her that wanted to stay. They both were hit with sudden change from the Lord. However, with the change they chose to obediently follow the Lord, even if they couldn’t see exactly where He was leading them.

Remember Rebekah? (Gen 24-25)

There she was minding her own business, drawing water from the well and then suddenly her whole life changes in a moment. A servant comes to her and tells her that he wants to bring her back to his master Isaac so she can be his wife. Imagine all the different emotions and thoughts that went through Rebekah’s mind? Although there was apart of her that didn’t want to leave her home, she knew that this was truly the Lord’s doing so she obediently followed. She left her father, mother and siblings. She left all that she had known and chose to walk into the unknowns with the Lord. She was embarking on a new journey with a man and a new family that she didn’t fully know. She was carrying the cloak of change.

Remember when Moses died? (Deut 34:5-12)

The great leader of Israel who carried the people through years of trials, tribulations, and triumphs was now gone. The people weeped and mourned for days. The bible says there was never another man like Moses who had shown mighty power or performed the awesome deeds in the sight of all Israel. He was an unforgettable man that left an unforgettable impact in all the hearts of the people he encountered. Imagine how the people must have felt at the news of his death? Grief? Fear? How were they supposed to move forward when the only leader they had known was now gone? As difficult as it was for the people, God still provided for them in the midst of their grief. He brought forth a new leader to guide them. Change was happening and I’m sure it was hard for them to embrace.

Remember the apostles? (Matthew 4:18-22)

Jesus approached them and said, “Follow me.” They left their comfortable normal routines of life and trusted their loving Savior to lead them the right way. Their lives were filled with unexpected moments, hungry days, tiresome journeys, and scary storms. Yet and still they chose to face the changes with the help of their Savior. They trusted, even in the midst of the constant changing circumstances.

Just like all of these individuals, we too will encounter change after change as long as we live upon this earth. Change is inevitable and we must accept that. Even though change can seem scary through our human, fickle thinking, we must seek to remind ourselves to CHANGE with CHRIST. Meaning, as long as we have Christ leading us and guiding us, change can be made beautiful EVEN in the most heart wrenching and difficult circumstances. Change if used properly will refine us and most importantly allow God’s glory to shine through us! Instead of focusing on the changing circumstances, we need to put our hope in our unchanging God. His love and faithfulness can be trusted. Look at His track record in your life. He is the constant when everything and everyone else is the variable. He is the same today, yesterday, and forever.
